Dear Student Affairs Colleagues:
Today we begin the recognition of National , which is traditionally held from September 15-October 15. Latinx Heritage Month honors the history, culture, and contributions of Americans whose ancestry may intersect with 20 countries in Latin America, including México, Central, and South America, and the Caribbean.
The federal government has honored Latinx Heritage Month or Hispanic Heritage Month as it was designated, since 1968 to celebrate the history and experiences of Latin cultures.
Our unity of our campus community is more important than ever during these times of climate challenges. We must continue to celebrate the multifaceted and interwoven heritage of all people in America as each individual provides unique contributions to our communities.
At Â鶹´«Ã½, we celebrate collectively and acknowledge the César Chávez Cultural Center (CCCC) in their daily work with students, faculty, and staff. Moreover, they work with students with purpose and intentionality, so students are able to define their personal, academic, and professional ambitions.
This year the César Chávez Cultural Center will celebrate 35 years of serving our campus. The César Chávez Cultural Center has transitioned all celebratory plans to an online format and will be hosting virtual programs; however, limited in-person visits to the Center are welcome. I recall being a student and visiting the Center often. The Center filled my soul. This sense of place contributed to my graduation as a Latino and first-generation student. I look forward to seeing the 40th and 50th and many more years!
I encourage you all to join the Chávez Center on social for more information on the following virtual initiatives you can participate in throughout September and October:
- Kick-Off Celebration for the 35th César Chávez Culture Center Anniversary
- Chávez Center affinity student club and organization
- Consejo of the Week – a weekly resource ranging from wellness practices, academic success strategies, and overall ways to maximize your student experience in a virtual space.
- Throwback memories – take a look at memories from past Latinx Heritage Month Celebration moments as we commemorate the Chávez Center 35th anniversary.
