Faculty of Color Community Network

The Faculty of Color Community Network aims to foster a greater sense of community and mutual support among faculty of color while enhancing inclusivity at the University. This Network is created as an informal forum while providing an opportunity for interacting and forming cross-disciplinary connections. This is not a committee or working group; instead, this group's purpose is intended for faculty of color to gather with each other and discuss issues that impact faculty of color on our campus.

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Next week we will honor the life, legacy, and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Most notable for his speeches that spoke truth to power, this day was not quickly deemed as a holiday as we see it today. Shortly after his assassination in 1968, the campaign to federally recognize Martin Luther King, Jr. began; however, it was not until 1983 that the holiday was signed into law. Finally, in 2000, all 50 states formally acknowledged and observed the holiday.

Kwanzaa: First Fruits Festival

Kwanzaa is a black, African and Pan-African commemoration with a celebration of family, community, and culture. It was created in 1966 by professor of African Studies, Dr. Maulana Karenga, a Black American scholar, partly inspired by Umkhosi Wokweshwama, or more recently known as Umkhosi Woselwa (鈥渇irst fruits festival鈥�). Beginning on Saturday, December 26, and ending Friday, January 1, 2021, members of our University community and around our world will be spending time filled with feast, entertainment, reflection, and recommitments.

Celebrating and Observing Hanukkah

Hanukkah is an eight-day holiday commemorating the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem following a Jewish victory in 165 BCE. The Temple had been seized by Assyrian soldiers, and, when it was restored into Jewish hands, a redemptive ritual of burning oil in the Temple鈥檚 menorah was planned. There was only one day鈥檚 worth of oil in the Temple, but the menorah was lit, and, miraculously, the oil lasted for the entire eight days of purification.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated annually on December 3 and the theme for 2020 is 鈥淣ot all disabilities are visible鈥�. The focus is to raise awareness and an understanding that many disabilities are not visible including mental illness, brain injuries, learning and cognitive dysfunctions, and others. At 麻豆传媒 specifically, over 60% of students who work with the Disability Resource Center have non-visible disabilities. The recognition of this day is a wonderful reminder to us all to evaluate the barriers that may exist within our units that may be a hindrance to people with either a visible or non-visible disability.

Native American Heritage Month

This November, 麻豆传媒 recognizes the indigenous peoples of the United States from over 570 federally recognized tribal nations and 75 state recognized tribes. Native American Heritage month was formally designated by President George H.W. Bush through joint resolution in 1990. Throughout the month of November, Native American Student Services seeks to align the educational initiatives with the mission and values: to build awareness around historical and contemporary Native issues, while acknowledging and exemplifying the rich culture, tradition, history, and language of American Indian and Alaska Native peoples.

D铆a de los Muerto, A Mexican Holiday Celebration

D铆a de los Muerto is a Mexican holiday celebrated each year from October 31 鈥� November 2. Not to be confused with Halloween, D铆a de los Muertos celebrates the belief that for a day, the separation of the spirit world and the real word opens to allow the souls of the dead to return and celebrate with their loved ones.

Indigenous People鈥檚 Day 2020

Indigenous People鈥檚 Day is recognized on the second Monday of October. The day began as a counter-celebration of the resistance and resilience of the indigenous communities of the United States in protest of Columbus Day. Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus, is often touted as the 鈥渇ounder鈥� of the Americas; however, not only is this narrative inaccurate, it is damaging and contributes to the erasure and violence of Indigenous peoples, historically and contemporarily.

LGBTQ+ History Month

LGBT History Month would not exist without Rodney Wilson, a 29-year-old Missouri history high school teacher who came out to his class in 1994. After teaching about the Holocaust, Wilson shared that he could have been killed for being gay had he lived during that time.
