Scholarships & Awards
The Department of Sociology has a number of available awards for students. For addiional information and to apply, please visit the Office of Financial Aid website. All the below awards are presented each spring at the Sociology Awards Reception. Students and their parents are invited.
Study Abroad Individual Scholarships
Rotary District 5440 has created a new scholarship opportunity available to eligible Â鶹´«Ã½, CSU, and UW undergraduate and graduate students. These three annual awards will be competitive, but could be a great source of funding for highly qualified students looking to do a short-term or long-term education abroad program and/or field study.
- Rotary International Scholarship: $2500
- Field Study/Seminar Scholarship: $2500
- International Scholarship: $5000
The District 5440 Scholarship Program will provide scholarships to students who will be studying/researching in one or more of the following six areas of focus:
- Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution
- Disease Prevention and Treatment
- Water and Sanitation
- Maternal and Child Health
- Basic Education and Literacy
- Economic and Community Development

Erika Lynn Miller Memorial Family Studies Scholarship
This scholarship memorializes Erika Lynn Miller, who was president of the family studies club, and who died in a tragic auto accident while she was still a student. Sociology majors with a family studies emphasis are invited to apply for this scholarship.
This scholarship, which varies from $1,000 to $2,000, is awarded to one student each year.
Requirements are:
- Must be a sociology major with a family studies emphasis,
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and
- 30 college credits completed.
- A desirable minor is gender studies.
Applications must be made through the Â鶹´«Ã½ Universal Scholarship Application. This is located in Ursa on the lower left hand side.
Walter Francis/Ford Cleere Award
This $250.00 award is given every spring to a graduating senior sociology major. Students must have:
- A 3.0 GPA.
- A demonstrated interest in social justice.
Applications must be made through the Â鶹´«Ã½ Universal Scholarship Application. This is located in Ursa on the lower left hand side. Don’t give up looking at the website just because you will be graduating!
Pat Wilkins-Wells Memorial Sociology Service Award
This award which is $200 -$300 is given each spring to a sociology major who has demonstrated a commitment to service for sociology or for the community or both. A sociology award committee makes the decision regarding this award, and application is through the sociology department.
Applications must be made through the Â鶹´«Ã½ Universal Scholarship Application. This is located in Ursa on the lower left hand side.
Sociology Scholars
Each spring the sociology department gives awards to up to six (6) junior and senior majors. Candidates for these awards are nominated by faculty members, and the award committee takes into consideration faculty recommendations as well as GPA.
