Guidance Related to Visa Status and Revocations

This webpage provides important information and resources for our non-citizen students, scholars, faculty and staff regarding the recent and ongoing visa cancellations by the U.S. government. As the situation continues to evolve, the university is committed to fostering a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all members of our community and ensuring our international students, scholars, and employees are informed and supported during this period of uncertainty.

How 鶹ý is Responding:

  • ’s International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) checks the government’s SEVIS immigration system regularly for updates to student visa records. If or when changes are made in the system, ISSS will contact impacted students directly through their BearMail account.

  • Students who are impacted by these federal actions can choose to share their immigration status with their department to request support or discuss potential next steps. This can include a conversation with the student’s faculty members to explore whether their degree requirements can be completed from abroad.

  • International student records are entitled to the same FERPA protection that otherwise governs student education records and 鶹ý will not share the names or details of any specific student circumstances, except as necessary to comply with immigration and employment regulations. For example, if a graduate student assistant is no longer permitted to be employed, ISSS will contact the campus employer and payroll.

  • ’s Office of Human Resources works in consultation with a firm of immigration attorneys who are staying abreast of changes at the federal level.

Individuals who receive notice from the federal government or ’s ISSS:

  • Students who receive a direct notification from any U.S. government agency that their visa has been canceled, or their immigration status has changed should immediately contact Kara LaSota in the Office of Global Engagement.
  • Faculty and staff receiving immigration-related notifications by a U.S. government agency should immediately contact Sarah Chase in Human Resources and their supervisor.

  • Faculty and staff who are currently sponsored by 鶹ý should also contact their assigned immigration attorney for additional guidance, and to discuss scheduling an immigration consult. Employees who would like help facilitating this process can contact Sarah Chase.

Anyone receiving these notices is also advised to contact their for assistance and may wish to consider hiring a qualified immigration attorney.
