New additions of tree species are being added to the self-guided campus tree tours at the University of Northern Colorado.
The updates include newly planted trees around the Campus Commons as well as European
Larch trees planted in the Carter Hall north lawn (image at right shows example of an European Larch). Tour participants will find 106 different types of trees.
“Trees that are selected for the trails reflect Colorado native trees, historically significant trees, state champion trees, unique trees and trees that have significant horticultural value, such as flowering, ornamental, shade and special plantings,” said Pat McDonald, manager of 鶹ý’s Landscaping and Grounds team.
All updates are expected to be finalized by National Arbor Day, Friday, April 26.
As part of Arbor Day celebrations, the university will plant three new Greenspire Linden trees at an event at 9:30 a.m. west of Candelaria Hall in the L-Lot. At the event, the Colorado Forest Service will present 鶹ý with its seventh Tree Campus USA recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation.
It takes about an hour to walk each of the three trails. Every trail has its own kiosk, map guide and holder with a QR code that takes users to the interactive Tree Tour website. The three Tree Tours include:
- Central Campus trail: Located at the west entrance of Gunter Hall with 38 trees (view the map of the trail and trees PDF);
- University Center and Campus Commons trail: Located at the main entrance of the University Center with 32 trees (view the map of the trail and trees PDF); and
- West Campus trail: Located in the Ross Hall courtyard with 36 trees (view the map of the trail and trees PDF).
The Landscaping and Grounds team reviews the trail marker posts and trail guides for updates every four to five years.
