HEERF III Emergency Funds
The provides supplemental Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF III) dollars to colleges and universities for emergency student grants. The purpose of the money is to award emergency financial aid grants to students that can be used for any component of the student's cost of attendance (COA) or for emergency costs that arise due to coronavirus, such as tuition, fees, food, housing, health care (including mental health care), or childcare.
As of August 1, 2021, and with the encouragement of the U.S. Federal Government, Â鶹´«Ã½ Administration has approved the use of limited HEERF III funds for individuals who were impacted by COVID-19 and have past due balances at Â鶹´«Ã½ from Spring or Fall 2020 or Spring, Summer or Fall 2021. Students in these categories are eligible to apply for limited Institutional HEERF III funds in order to help resolve their past due balances. Eligible students interested in applying for help with past due balances due to COVID-19 should contact either Geri Landwehr or Marty Somero for more information. Students should be prepared to provide a detailed explanation about how COVID-19 impacted their ability to pay Â鶹´«Ã½ as well as present any requested documentation.
Â鶹´«Ã½ began disbursing additional HEERF III Act funds beginning the week of August 16, 2021 to eligible students who have been impacted by COVID-19. See FAQ below for additional information on eligibility.
As of 3/25/22, Â鶹´«Ã½ distributed 23,827 refunds for $11,135,558.00 in HEERF III Funds and $18,785,772 for 41,212 awards overall.

HEERF II Emergency Funds
The recently enacted provided supplemental Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF II) dollars to colleges and universities for emergency student grants. The University of Northern Colorado is distributing over $4.1 million in HEERF II Act funding in a way that prioritizes eligible students with the greatest demonstrated need and ensures that funds are distributed as widely as possible. This pool of funding will be allocated to students through various methods. First, more than three-fourths of the funds, nearly $3.5 million, was allocated directly to all students with the amount of each student’s emergency grant being determined on a sliding scale based on their . The next round of funds was made available through an application process to eligible students enrolled in spring 2021 semester who continued to face significant financial hardship.
Students enrolled in spring 2021 who were eligible for HEERF II funds received emails between late May and June indicating they have remaining eligibility if they continued to face significant financial hardship.
The remaining HEERF II funds will be made available to eligible students who are enrolled in summer 2021 semester. An email was sent to students’ BearMail on July 6 and included a link to the certification form.

2020 - CARES Act Emergency Funds
The U.S. government recently enacted the federal to provide money to colleges and universities for emergency student grants. The purpose of the money is to give emergency grants to students for specific expenses that are a direct result of the disruption of campus operations due to the coronavirus. Â鶹´«Ã½ has signed and returned to the Department of Education the Certification Agreement to assure that we intend to use, no less than 50 percent of the $7,650,214 received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.
The University of Northern Colorado will distribute $3,825,107 in CARES Act funding in a way that prioritizes eligible students with the greatest demonstrated need and ensures that funds are distributed as widely as possible. This pool of funding will be allocated to students through two methods. First, more than two-thirds of the funds, nearly $2.6M, was to be allocated directly to all Title IV-eligible students with the amount of each student’s emergency grant being determined on a sliding scale based on their Expected Family Contribution. (As of January 4, 2021, Â鶹´«Ã½ has made 7,126 CARES refunds for a total of $3,542,646.42). The remaining funds have been made available through an application process to students enrolled in fall 2020 semester with a small amount to be used for spring 2021 students who continue to face significant financial hardship. is a requirement to receive CARES Act assistance through the direct allocation or application process, as directed by the Department of Education.
