The basic responsibility of all adopters is follow-through with your signed agreement. Your agreement simply is to keep your flowerbeds weed-free, and your flowers healthy. If you are in the Clean-up Program: that you show up promptly to your monthly designated day at your specific Adopt-A- Spot location. What does it cost for me to Adopt-A-Spot? There is no cost to Adopt-A-Spot. The university will pay for the sign identifying you or your group as the adopter. Adopters are expected to provide their own tools. Some adopters may incur their own expenses if they would like to add or modify planting in flowerbeds beyond what the university will provide. Please note that the university has a limited budget, so adding new beds, or upgrading existing is at the discretion of the university and the Landscaping & Grounds Department. How much time will I need to commit? We encourage all volunteers to spend time at least once a week and no less than twice a month throughout the growing season (May 15- October 15). Annual flowers may require watering at least three times a week if there is no automatic irrigation. Regular, routine care will improve the appearance of your flowers, and make care much easier. Clean-Up volunteers will need to commit at least one hour each month to their specified Adopt-A-Spot route or area(s). The amount of time will depend on how much trash/litter is on the ground. Can I adopt more than one flowerbed or Clean-Up spot? We ask that volunteers care for only one flowerbed and one Clean-Up spot at a time. We desire that all adopters provide the care necessary to be successful. Do I need to have gardening experience? A green thumb is helpful but not required! If you need to assistance we are more than happy to assist you. What if Im unable to meet my commitment? We do expect that there will be times when volunteers will not be able fulfill their commitments because of moving, health, or other life changes. All we expect is that you contact our office and to let us know whether this is a temporary, short-term absence or an extensive or permanent absence. We will either arrange other volunteers to fill-in during your absence or our staff will do so. If you are unable to meet your commitment at all, then we will arrange to have other volunteers adopt your spot. How is a Spot defined? Flowerbed locations are determined by the Landscaping & Grounds Departments. Locations are selected based on close proximity of building entrances, landscape enhancement, and water sources. Please confirm with our staff the size and scope of the flowerbed that you are interested in.
